Children's Cancer is Curable!

Each year 175,000 children worldwide are diagnosed with cancer, of which an estimated 90,000 will die from the disease. The exact number of new cases is not known because in many countries not all children with cancer are registered and many are not ever even diagnosed correctly. These figures are staggering given the fact that 70% of all childhood cancers are curable when diagnosed and treated early. Cancer is the second leading cause of death among children in developed countries. The most common type of cancer in Europe, Americas, East Asia and among the Caucasian population is Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, whereas Burkitt’s lymphoma.

Taras Grabchiuk – Fundraising Is Closed.

Six months ago we began a fundraising for the treatment of Taras Grabchiuk. Nobody thought that it would be possible to raise that much money in such short period of time. We were able to raise over 2 mln grivnas for bone marrow transplant in one of the hospitals in Germany. A lot of charitable events not only in Ukraine, but also far beyond its borders, internet resources, mass media, all that was used by many people, young and old, who had a common goal to save Taras’ life.

We have to write this message because of the extraordinary circumstances in the department of nephrology. February 9, doctors diagnosed with measles one of the patient in the department. Infectious diseases are extremely dangerous for the children with cancer because their immune system is ruined, and infection can be fatal for the children who are weak because of the chemotherapy. Hematologists made a decision to administer immunoglobulin (Bioven Mono) to all leukemia patients. The medicine Bioven Mono will be able to protect the children from measles. We ordered the medicine right away, and now it is ready for pickup at a pharmacy, and we have to pay for it. 24 packages that we need cost 14 178 grivnas ($1,772).

Taras Grabchuk. Latest News.

As of January 24, 2012 we raised 2 777 624 grivnas ($247,203). It is 96% of the amount we need to raise. The expected cost of the treatment is 2 900 000 grivnas. December 31, Taras finished the second week of the chemo per protocol RIST. On Sunday Taras could have some rest, and on Monday January 2, 2012, Taras began taking pills that slow down the growth of the tumor. The protocol RIST implies 4 weeks of chemo, and 4 weeks of pills, and according to our plan, it will be over January 29. After that, Taras will have to undergo very detailed testing.

Vasil Needs Our Help

After a lengthy treatment in Ohmadyt in Kiev, Vasil returned home. The treatment of acute leukemia has had good results, and chemotherapies that were so hard on the boy are now in the past. It was a six months period of frightening news and fighting for life. Vasil had it all: pulmonary hemorrhage, two weeks of intensive care, unbearable pain, suffering and much more. But the boy was not giving up; he continued to fight his decease.

Art Class at The Department of Hematology

Art class is the time of entertainment, positive emotions, and meetings with interesting people that our volunteers bring to the department of hematology at Ivano-Frankivsk Children’s Hospital. Classes like this one give to the kids an opportunity to forget about unpleasant treatment, and to the parent – to have an hour of rest. This time, the children were cutting out snowflakes and snowmen, and after that, they prepared handmade holiday cards that they promised to give to their loved ones.

Charitable Events To Help Olga Pilipchiuk

Artists and musicians of Ivano-Frankivsk got together to help Olga Pilipchiuk. Twelve-year old Olga has been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Ms Alena, the art director of the café “Marmulada” provided the facility for the event. Two groups of musicians, “Puppet Show” and “Flower Blossom”, agreed to sing during the event. Photographers Oleg Antoshkiv, Natalia Kabliuk, Volodia Barlozhetsky, Igor Magnovsky, Roman Dzvinchiuk, Alexander Torbiak, Andiy Shustikevich, Vladimir Fuchenko, and designer Nata Meta donated their works of art for the charitable auction.

St. Nick's visit to the hospitals and orphanages

St Nicholas worked very hard all week visiting the children in hospitals, orphanages, and shelters. In these places, children were waiting for him, his gifts, and sincere greetings the most. Here he is: tall, with lush beard, dressed in gilded clothes. The children were gasping in surprise, the adults were smiling, and everybody was waiting for a miracle. St Nick and his help the Angel come the hospital wards, greet the children, and give them gifts. During our visit to Ivano-Frankivsk regional hospital, we steeped by the surgical department first, and then we went to the department of hematology.

As a part of the project “St. Nick’s Sack” organized by the charitable foundation “Ty Anhel” for the last four years, a holiday event for the children with disabilities and orphans took place. One hundred children participated in the event. The event took place at a disco club “Europa” in Dolyna. The children from a catholic Sunday school presented a Christmas play and sang Christmas carols.
