We would like to share good news about  the treatment of Volodimir Oliynyk, the optimistic, positive, smart, and handsome boy whose destiny is to go through the extremely  difficult battle with a terrible disease. When I look in this child’s eyes, in his smiling face, it is hard to believe and even imagine how difficult where the challenges and how long was the journey to the victory, to the full recovery. With our whole soul we pray our merciful God to grant the full recovery to the four year old Volodimir.

It is the first time that the doctors let Volodimir to go home. Saturday and Sunday he will spend  with his mom in his apartment in Kalusha. Volodimir misses his friends from Kalusha, Sofia and Vika, and he hopes to see them on the weekend.

Thursday, the sixth chemotherapy block was over. Usually the chemo lasts one day or two, and one week breaks follows after that. During this week the kids sometimes may go home. Before Volodimir’s tests were not good; the low white blood cells and hemoglobin did not allow Volodimir to go home.

Now Volodimir feels much better. He walks by himself and plays with the other children in the hospital. After taking all the drugs, his tummy is smaller and the fluids there where everywhere even under his heart are gone. The heart rate stabilized. The chemotherapy is still hard on Volodimir, but the good appetite that Volodimir lately has helps to gain back strength. Volodimir likes to eat buckwheat, beets, cereal, and his mom is happy for that. Because of his good appetite, Volodimir’s test results after the sixth chemo were good and he could go home.

The protocol consists of the eight blocks of chemo, so two more chemos are ahead. The next one will begin on Wednesday.

When all the chemotherapy is done, Volodimir will undergo the general medical exams and based on the results the decision about the further treatment will be done. The probability that he will need a surgery again is high. It is hard to make prognosis about the treatment.  As of today, the doctors were not even able to make the exact diagnosis. In the National Institute of Cancer in Kiev, Volodimir was diagnosed with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma and the treatment is based on this diagnosis. Doctor Zhaharzeva from Kiev Municipal Oncological Center diagnosed a different disease. It was critical to begin the treatment and the doctors from Ivano-Frankivsk had to begin the chemotherapy per rhabdomyosarcoma protocol even though they were not sure that the diagnosis was correct.  Encouraging is the fact that the child’s body responds well to the chemotherapy and we believe it proves that the treatment is correct.

Please join us in the prayer for Volodimir.

Our Lord, Jesus Christ! When You lived on earth, people brought to  You their sick close ones. Often sick people came to You in crowds, and You lifted the sick on their feet, You cleansed  the lepers, You returned vision to the blind, ability to speak to the mute, and hearing to the deaf. To all those who were seriously sick You gave health of the soul and body. In Your mercy look down to Your servant Volodimir, and if it is Your  holy will, return him his health.
