Today, August 21, our volunteer visited Mykola Bayliak, 13-year old boy, at the department of hematology. Mykola is diagnosed with  a rare disease – mielosarcoma.

Doctors are planning to begin the second chemotherapy tomorrow. Mykola’s parents were able to raise all the money needed for Avastin, the drug used in the chemotherapy. The cost of the four vials that will be used during one chemotherapy is 46,500 UAH ($5,813). Avastin is used to slow down the growth of the tumor. It is impossible to predict how many chemotherapy sessions Mykola will need, because the experience in the treatment of this type of cancer is limited.

At present, only two children in Ukraine are treated for mielosarcoma. But even now it is clear that two chemotherapy sessions will not be enough. That is why Bayliak family is turning to everybody asking for help.

The first chemotherapy session was very hard on Mykola. It was planned that the chemotherapy would last 14 days but it lasted much longer. After first three days, Mykola  fell into a coma. More than a week, Mykola spent in intensive care unit and on top of everything, he got pneumonia. Thanks to God, doctors, parents, and Mykola’s courage, Mykola was able to find a way out of this critical situation and he finished the first chemotherapy.
Now Mykola is feeling better, though he continues to take strong painkillers.

Charitable Foundation “Ty Anhel” gave Mykola as a gift a puzzle with Neuschwanstein Castle. It is probably the most beautiful castle in Germany and in the whole world. It is difficult for Mykola to make the picture now because his hands are too weak, but Mykola promised us to recover, make the puzzle, put the picture on the wall and to visit the castle in the future.…

This year, Mikola was going to the 9th grade, but life had a different plan for him. School friends do not forget about Mikola, and   they visited him in hospital. Parents of the classmates gave blood for Mikola when it was necessary.  During the first chemotherapy, Mikola had blood transfusion six times (if you have Michola’s blood type (1+), please consider donating blood for the boy in the future.

Micola’s two sisers, 17-years- old Christina and 7-year-old Olia visit Mikola all the time. They have only one dream now: they want Mikola to recover as soon as possible.

Olia remembers how she made piroghi with Mikola. They found a recipe in the Encyclopedia for  boys. It was funny to see that the dough was everywhere, even on the walls.  Mikola is upset because he cannot go to the woods to pick up mushrooms.  Mikola loves mountains, and when he heard that there are a lot of mushrooms in the mountains this year, he said to his parents, “It is enough. I am tired of battling my disease. I want to recover and go to the mountains!”

We pray that Mikola’s dreams come true!
