Out of many types of art therapy that we use with children, painting has a special place. Drawing is a way to learn, to communicate, and to heal. Shapes, sizes, and colors that children use reveal that a child really wants, his or her fears, hopes, and moods.

We conducted one of such classes with the children from the department of hematology at Ivano-Frankivsk Children’s Hospital on Friday, May 24. Organizers of the class were art-therapist Ganna Maximchiuk,  medical school students Valentina Maximchiuk and Julia Tachinska and Albina Grizkevich.

Children were drawing with their own fingers, glue, colored semolina prepared in advance.

Nine children attended the class; all other children were  receiving chemotherapy at that time.

Children liked the unusual way of drawing and they gladly used the colored semolina for painting. Some kids were drawing cars, others hearts, flowers, sun, animals, moms, houses, butterflies, and imprints of their own hands.

At the end of the class, we had an exhibition of all the kids’ works. We were impressed and overwhelmed with emotions. And we are looking forward to see the children again next Friday.
